INSPIRATIONAL twins have become the youngest ever people to climb the three highest mountains in Wales – at just 10 years old.

Mack and Hope Caraher, from Eastcote, followed in the bootsteps of SAS hopefuls as they tackled the three peaks challenge on May 17 and 18 with their dad, Campbell, to raise money for the Prostate Cancer Research Charity after their grandfather – who lives in Ruislip but whom the family prefers not to name – was diagnosed with the disease last year.

“I’m obviously immensely proud of them,” said Mr Caraher, who also took part in last year’s challenge.

“We spent four weeks training by walking up Ducks Hill to Mount Vernon Hospital and back on a 10 mile trip and walking down the A40 to Target roundabout.”

The group ascended and descended a total of 9,397feet, on Pen Y Fan – notorious from SAS regiment selection trials – Cadair Idris and Mount Snowdon – a total of 20 miles.

“This is an extremely demanding challenge,” said Mr Caraher.

“But it didn’t bother the kids. They just kept climbing. Getting up at 4am was probably the hardest thing.”

The group joined 500 other climbers at the base of Pen y Fan in the Breacon Beacons at 4.45am on Saturday morning and completed the challenge by 7pm the following day.

Teams of experienced mountain leaders and safety marshals offered support along the route.

“It’s not the easiest path,” said Mr Caraher. “Some parts you got to and thought: ‘How am I going to get up there?’,” he said.

The group was blessed with perfect weather and Mr Caraher took photos for the charity along the route.

Mack and Hope were back in school on Monday, proudly holding the certificates they got at the finish line.

The group have raised more than £2,000 for Prostate Cancer Research.
