A TWICKENHAM mum has been found guilty of conning the Richmond Council out of more than £46,000 in benefits.
Sasha Legge, 39, of Cobbett Road, told the council she was living alone and claimed income support as a lone parent, housing benefit and council tax benefits, despite living with her partner in High Street, Whitton, at the time.
Legge stole the money between December 2004 and February 2009.
She admitted the offences at Kingston Crown Court on June 17 and was handed a four month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work. She was also given a £200 bill for court costs.
Deputy leader of Richmond Council Geoffrey Samuel said: "This woman has scrounged thousands of pounds from the public, at a time when the country and Richmond Council can least afford it. This is thoroughly reprehensible behaviour and I hope her time working off her community service will make her think twice about committing this type of crime in the future.
"The council will always push for people who steal money to face the law, and we will now begin proceedings to recover as much of the money as possible."
