A veteran Ealing councillor is standing down after serving the people of Southfield ward for 20 years.

Lib Dem Harvey Rose , who was first elected in May 1994, is calling it a day at next month's local election.

He said: “It has been a real pleasure as a Liberal Democrat councillor to represent the residents of Southfield over the past 20 years, dealing with all kinds of issues, helping people with difficulties and improving the area. I will miss helping people out, using my experience to point people in the right direction or stop something unpleasant happening."

Mr Rose said one of his highlights as a councillor was introducing fun fares onto Acton Green Common , and added decision to leave was not one made in haste. He said: “It's been on my mind for a while, and I think 20 is plenty.”

Mr Rose plans to spend more time volunteering and will continue to help the Lib Dem group where possible.

Gary Busuttil, the Liberal Democrats candidate in Southfield, who hopes to replace Mr Rose, said: "Harvey has my admiration for the energy and effort that he has given during his time as Councillor. His knowledge is inspiring, his drive to get things done is admirable, his attendance in the council is second to none. He is a great mentor, and his shoes will be difficult to fill."

At the time of writing the full list of candidates contesting the Southfield council ward have still to be made public.
