An abusive commuter who poured drink over a Tube worker has escaped prison.

Abi Finni also verbally abused the customer services assistant during an argument at Wembley Park Tube Station.

The altercation happened in June last year, when the 33-year-old, of Harlesden Road, Willesden, approached staff at the exit gates without a ticket.

Finni claimed he had lost his bag and had been allowed to travel by conductors at Willesden Green Station.

But while the matter was being looked into, he lost his temper and abused a worker before spraying them with the drink he was holding.

After his initial arrest, Finni was bailed, but did not return to Wembley Park police station.

A warrant was issued and he was rearrested before being charged with common assault.

Finni appeared at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court on September 10 and pleaded guilty.

He was hit with a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £50 compensation and £50 court costs.

Aidan Harris, manager of London Underground's workplace violence unit, said: "This sentence should serve as a warning to anyone out there that verbal abuse can be just as harmful as physical abuse and that the courts take this type of offence extremely seriously.

"No one, let alone our staff members should have to endure any form of abuse for simply doing their job."

PC James Chu, one of the investigating officers, added: "All staff have the right to work without fear of abuse or assault and this is a high priority for the British Transport Police.

"We welcome Finni's conviction and hope that the sentence handed down to him serves as some form of justice for his victim."
