Teammates and opponents have united in paying respect to popular footballer Alex Stephens, who has died suddenly at the age of 21.

The left-back, who played for AFC Wembley, was on holiday in Barcelona when he died on June 18.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed the 21-year-old's death.

A spokesperson said: "We are providing consular assistance to the family at this sad time."

Mr Stephens, who grew up in Hawthorn Road, Willesden, had previously played for youth clubs in Brent before he joined Watford and went on to play as a left-back at Norwich City academy from 2009 to 2011.

Michael Edghill, club secretary at AFC Wembley, said: "He was very easy-going and a great mate to all the team members, everybody was a friend.

"It is like losing a family member. He was a very talented footballer, he always played well," he said.

Ricky Martin, academy manager at Norwich,told the League Football Association: "He was a bubbly and easy-going lad, very well-liked by his team-mates and staff during his time with us.

"Our thoughts are very much with Alex’s family and friends at this time."

Friends have taken to Twitter to express their shock and sadness at the news.
