A funeral takes place on Friday (June 13) for an ‘outstanding’ woman crowned the Star of Ealing in the Gazette’s Pride in Our People Awards 2009.

Magdalen Carter, of Acton , died on May 15, aged 78, and her funeral will be held at St
Mary’s Catholic Cemetery Chapel, Brent.

Mrs Carter was recognised in the Pride awards for co-founding the Acton Saturday School for underprivileged children in the early 1970s with her husband Cuthbert Carter, who died in 2009 aged 81.

In the 1980s Mrs Carter volunteered for the Acton Probation Service, visiting young boys and their families in prison and detention centres.

Nina Carter, 52, said her mother was an outstanding woman who was humble, quiet, thoughtful and caring.

She said: “My mother was always very helpful to family and friends and was always smiling.

“She was known as the person in the background as she would always be organising.”

Ms Carter, who lives in Luton, has an older brother, Raymon, and had another brother, John, who died of lymphoma cancer in 1994.

Maureen Lee, funeral director and friend of the Carters, said: “I did the service for Cuthbert and will now lead Magdalen’s.

“They gave up so much of themselves for the children of the borough.

“Cuthbert was 81 when he died in January 2009.”

Ms Lee, of Ealing, added: “Magdalen was disappointed he was not around to see the award.”

Mrs Carter’s hobbies included dress making, baking, cake decorating and flower arranging.

As well as Nina and Raymon, she leaves behind nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one stepson.
