A bench dedicated to a husband and wife who were respected members of the Chelsea community has been unveiled.

David Craig, a GP who grew up in Oakley Street, died in July 2003, aged 71. Former councillor and nurse Jean Craig MBE passed away last July after suffering an infection.

She had been a key figure in the Kensington and Chelsea Conservative Association for many years.

A bench inscribed with their names has now been unveiled in the St Luk'es Gardens, Sydney Street, where the Craig family used to walk their dog, Paws.

Son Andrew Craig said: "It was touching to see so many people turn up. It means a lot to the family. My parents would be amused to know that they are still providing a community service.

"It's funny, we used to play in the gardens and think 'who are the funny people whose names are on the benches?'. Now I know."

The couple met after Mrs Craig started work as a nurse at a doctor's practice runby Mr Craig's father, Duncan Craig. They had a long and happy marriage and worked as doctor and nurse at the family home in Britten Street, Chelsea, until their retirement in 2000.

They had two children, Andrew and Anne, and a grandchild.
