A BUSY stretch of road in Ealing will be closed for up to 10 days while urgent water main repair works take place.

The northbound A406 Gunnersbury Avenue, between Chiswick Roundabout and Pope's Lane, will be closed from 8pm today (April 30), to allow Thames Water to carry out the burst main works.

Traffic will be diverted from the Chiswick Roundabout via Chiswick High Street, Acton Lane and Uxbridge Road, before being able to join the A406 Hanger Lane and cars travelling South will not be affected.

Alan Bristow, Transport for London’s Traffic Director, said: "We have liaised with Thames Water over these urgent works and have insisted they work 24 hours a day to complete these repairs as quickly as possible. We ask motorists to bear with us while these works are carried out and we will do our best to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum."

Steve Shine, Thames Water’s Chief Operating Officer, said: "We understand this work will cause inevitable disruption to road users and local residents, but we have to carry out these repairs urgently to stop the leak getting any worse. We would like to assure road users and local residents that we will be working around the clock to complete this work as quickly as we can."

There will also be disruption for train passengers during the Bank Holiday weekend as the District Line will be closed between Turnham Green and Ealing Broadway.

Anyone wanting to travel to Ealing Broadway should change at Hammersmith for the Piccadilly Line and then get on a rail replacement bus outside Ealing Common station.
