Following the announcement that the Tory-run Harrow Council want to introduce free 20 minute parking, traders in Harrow are celebrating.

Raj Degamia, chairman of the Stanmore Chamber of Trade, said: “It is a very good idea and I welcome it with open arms.

“A town centre like ours here in Stanmore will thrive as a result of this.

“We discussed this with Susan and Councillor Chana [cabinet member for business] and I applaud the fact that they have looked at this because we need free parking.

“I get a lot of people who just want to pop in and out in 20 minutes - and it will keep the traffic moving too."

Drivers will type their vehicle’s registration number into a ticket machine in order to get a one-off voucher to display in their window under a proposal unveiled by Harrow Council leader Susan Hall (Conservative) on Monday following months of debate with the Labour and Independent Labour groups.

Mr Degamia added: “It's a great move and it means Harrow is moving in the right direction.”
