When we travel by train, we do so in carriages with automatic doors which we cannot fall out of,with windows that we cannot lean out of, and we have announcements to warn us of the gap, as we leave the train, and to take all our belongings with us.
We are safe, obsessively so. Trains between Wealdstone and Euston have notices on their toilets, telling us the toilets are flushed on to the track. These trains are modern, with all the safety features I have described. I had believed that discharging toilets on to the track had stopped 40 years ago.
With all this emphasis on safety, why has the safety and health of trackside workers been overlooked in this way?
