A SWISS mother whose husband left her with thousands of pounds worth of debt and two young children says the Christmas toy appeal is much-needed for struggling families in Ealing.

Last week The Gazette launched the 11th annual Christmas Toy Appeal, urging readers to spare a thought for the borough's less-privileged children.

The appeal asks for donations of toys and games to help make Christmas special for parents and children who may not be able to afford to buy gifts and presents.

This year, we are working with HomeStart Ealing, a charity supporting families who are experiencing isolation, depression and poverty, and who have at least one child under the age of five.

Miriam Wall, who lives in Billington Mews with her four and nine-year-old children, said HomeStart has provided a lifeline for her and her family.

The full-time mum, said: "I first heard of HomeStart after being referred by my GP when my husband left us. I moved to the UK from Switzerland 20 years ago but I didn't really know anyone and felt isolated and was struggling financially.

"My mother couldn't come over to help as she had cancer at the time. I was assigned a volunteer, who came each week for a couple of hours for a cup of tea and chat, and she also played with the children which gave me time to sort out paperwork.

"It was a huge struggle having to do everything alone and bringing up the children and it can be difficult around Christmas time. It's about families, but it can also be a lonely time of year for some. My husband built up debts I didn't know about and it has been tough buying Christmas presents. The toy appeal is brilliant and really needed."

Books, arts and craft sets, dolls, puzzles and games are needed - all donations must be new items and can be dropped off at the main office at Questors Theatre, 12 Mattock Lane, Ealing W5 5BQ, Monday to Friday between 10am and 6pm until Monday, December 7.
