A campaign to support Dairy Crest workers in Hanworth faced with an uncertain future is being led by Tory candidate for Feltham and Heston Simon Nayyar.

Following the company's announcement last month that it intends to close the glass bottling plant, which put 200 employees at risk of redundancy, Mr Nayyar has taken on the fight on behalf of the workforce to get them the best possible deal.

A meeting which will discuss several issues including the possibility of redeploying staff and offering generous redundancy settlements will take place between Mr Nayyar and Dairy Crest chief executive Mark Allen on Friday (24).

Simon Nayyar, the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Feltham and Heston

The PR guru selected to contest the Feltham and Heston seat in the general elections next year, said: "The decision of Dairy Crest to close this bottling plant, which has been a major local employer over many years, is desperately sad news for the Dairy Crest workers who have given their time, energy and loyalty to the company.

"It means an uncertain time for them and their families as Christmas approaches.

"I will be seeking guarantees from Mark Allen that the company will be unstinting in its efforts to redeploy staff who are due to lose their jobs in Hanworth.

"I want to see Mark Allen go the golden mile in making sure all staff who lose their jobs are properly equipped with the opportunities and skills to find decent alternative employment quickly and that all laid off employees receive generous redundancy settlement reflecting the loyalty they've given Dairy Crest over many years."

The move to help the 200 workers has received support from Matthew Hancock, minister for business, enterprise & energy, who said: "I look forward to receiving a progress report from Simon who will, I know work hard with Dairy Crest and the local community to make sure the workforce have all the support, guidance and training they need to find new, sustainable jobs."
