I was surprised to read that Isleworth Community Group councillor Phil Andrews is trying to blame Hounslow's previous Labour administration for the problems at the Mogden Sewage Works.

He and his Tory chums have now been in control of the council for three years. Surely then, they should take some of the responsibility for the decision to allow Thames Water to increase the plant's capacity?

When Hounslow Council was under Labour control, it served an abatement notice in order to get Thames Water to comply with its obligations.

The company successfully appealed - but the original abatement notice was eventually upheld.

Subsequently, local Labour MP Ann Keen brought the environment minister to view the plant. She was able to highlight to him the fact that some residents have had to buy window nets and insecticides to combat the mosquitoes.

The recurring problem, however, is that throughout the plant's entire 73-year history its owners have used stalling tactics in order to try and evade responsibility.
