Margravine Cemetery in Hammersmith has been awarded ‘outstanding’ at the London in Bloom competition.

It follows last year’s "thriving" achievement and recognised the hard work and effort put in by the friends of the cemetery who tend to it.

Margravine scored 39 out of 40 in community participation, 28 out of 30 in environmental responsibility and 22 out of 30 for gardening achievement.

The judges’ report said: “The numerous Friends of the Cemetery have worked hard to conserve, document and improve the extensive site. They have worked in liaison with the local authority, parks police and residents to benefit the cemetery and local community.”

Nathalie Mahieu collected the award on behalf of the Friends of Margravine Cemetery. She said: “We are proud to accept the award. It looks like we were the only cemetery to receive such a high score and that’s testament to the hard work of the volunteers who give their time and effort all year round to keep the cemetery in good and attractive condition.”

Ruth Savery, secretary of the Friends, who prepared a detailed brochure for the judges, said: “This is a tremendous honour and recognises that Margravine Cemetery is a wonderful jewel in our community.”
