A talented girl with two very different interests - maths and modelling - has taken third place in a national beauty pageant contest.

It seems Shivani Member, of Hatton Road, Bedfont, will have a tough choice when she grows up choosing between becoming an actuary or taking to the catwalk, after she was named runner-up in the Junior Miss Galaxy UK 2014 last week.

She was also crowned winner of best hair and junior miss charity at the glamorous event held at the Park Hall Hotel in Lancashire, on Friday, March 7.

But for now the 12-year-old will bury her head back in her books as she prepares to sit her maths A-level - five years early - this summer, having already achieved an A* in the subject at GCSE.

Shivani said: "I was shocked to be announced in the top 3 as it was my first time taking part in a pageant.

"I felt really proud and happy.

"It is a really big achievement for me to become the 2nd runner up in my first pageant.

"I met wonderful people from contestants to staff who supported me throughout the wonderful journey.

"I will now be concentrating in my maths studies as my exams are coming up soon and as soon as they will finish I will probably be doing another pageant."

Proud parents, father Harsh Member, and mother Tarulata, were thrilled their daughter was a runner-up and said she is determined to come back and win next year.

Mrs Member said: "This was the first time she had entered a pageant and it was great when they called out her name.

"She's got beauty and brains.

"My husband knew she would win something and she wants to go back next year and win.

"We are very proud of her."

During the pageant Shivani also raised £900 for The Christie charity through various fundraising activities such as bucket collection in Asda and door-to-door donations.
