Any proposal which helps to stop the development of Heathrow has got to be welcomed.

The high-speed train link is excellent if it can come up to passengers' expectations of reliability and a reasonable amount of comfort - and, of course, competitive pricing.

The best proposal of all, though, is one which the Mayor is looking into - the development of London Airport in the Thames estuary. The probable high cost of this must NOT deter speculators.

If airport expansion is as urgent as is made out, the costs will be recouped in a few years. In the meantime, prime London land will be made available for more environmentally-friendly projects, thousands of residents will not be forced to move out, the airport will not have to fight so many battles over noise and further expansion.
