SO, IT has finally come to pass - Tesco is ready to spread its tentacles to embrace our high street in Ruislip.

And everyone just shrugs their shoulders and looks glum.

I understand that little can be done to stop this happening as the shop being taken over - Woolworths - has a similar retail rating.

But surely, we could express our exasperation or even anger that these multi-national companies can move in at will.

We already have at least five food shops in the High Street plus an independent butcher/greengrocer, three bakers and Waitrose at the end of the road. How much can we all eat?

The application for a liquor licence from dawn till late at night is also very worrying. How much can we drink?

The Chamber of Commerce thinks it is better to have Tesco than an empty shop; in the future I guarantee that there will be several more empty shops.

For my part, I will continue to boycott all Tesco stores while supporting the local established ones. I know it's like spitting in the wind but at least my conscience will be clear when the shops in our lovely high street start closing down.
