Tesco has been granted an alcohol licence for a new store in Isleworth, despite objections from more than 400 people.

The supermarket chain's licensing application for the local branch in Clifton Road, near Heston & Isleworth fire station, was approved last night by Hounslow Council's licensing panel.

The hours were amended slightly, meaning the store can sell alcohol between 8am and 11pm Monday to Sunday, rather than from 6am, as originally proposed.

Tesco has also agreed not to sell beer, lager or cider above 5.5 per cent ABV at the premises, with the exception of specialist craft beers.

Hundreds of local residents had signed a petition opposing the alcohol licence application for the store, which was home to the ARK Heating plumbing shop.

More than 400 people also submitted individual objections to the application, which were taken into consideration last night.

Campaigners said they were concerned about the impact of another store selling alcohol in an area where they say drink-related antisocial behaviour is already a big problem, especially in Thornbury Park. Brentford and Isleworth MP Mary Macleod had said she understood their concerns.

Tesco had said it takes its responsibilities regarding the sale of alcohol seriously and maintains a 'Challenge 25' policy in all stores to prevent the sale of alcohol to under-18s.
