REPLYING to the letters regarding Tesco's proposed move into the premises formerly occupied by Woolworths (Let Tesco know how we feel, Letters, August 16 and subsequent weeks), the Ruislip Chamber of Commerce has been looking for this prominent site to be occupied as soon as possible and we have been working hard behind the scenes to encourage a number of outlets to consider moving into Ruislip, but without success.

We are aware a number of big brand names looked at the site but each felt it would only be suitable for a mini-store, and research showed that in many cases the old Woolworths sites have been taken on by 99p or pound stores and we feel this would not be in keeping with the area.

As Tesco is taking over an existing retail site, no change of use is required. There are some cosmetic changes proposed but the planning documents filed and agreed by the council appear to be in keeping with the area.

We are pleased that the site will now be occupied, but have invited Tesco to discuss with us how it sees its role within our community.

Regarding the application for a liquor licence, we would point out that all the food chains from Waitrose and M&S down to the small independent retailers have a liquor licence and it would be surprising if Tesco were not to apply for one.

Ruislip High Street is a thriving business community which is pleased to welcome new businesses. However, the chamber does have concerns about parking and, as we are already in discussions with the council about parking in and around Rosily, we have added to the agenda our concerns about the increased need for short-term parking when the new store opens.
