An active teenage girl is set to embark on a 6,000-mile trip across the globe to take her place on an international adventure.

Abigail Carlen, of The Avenue, Pinner has been selected to represent Girlguiding at the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Japan next year – where she will take part in a host of community action and cultural projects and meet more than 30,000 young people from all over the world.

The 14 year-old is a member of 2nd Headstone Guide group and will be one of around 4,000 Guides and Scouts from the UK taking part in the huge 12-day global youth event next summer.

She said: “Being a member of Girlguiding opens up so many exciting opportunities.

“I would never have got to go to Japan without guiding and I can’t wait to take part in this international adventure.”

As part of a team of 40 young people, Abigail will have the opportunity to immerse herself in Japanese culture, explore the latest developments in science and technology and help to raise awareness of global issues such as the environment and human rights.

There will also be a peace programme commemorating the atomic bombing of cities in Japan during the Second World War, which will include a visit to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.

To raises funds for her trip Abigail will be holding a Fundraising Quiz Night on Saturday, July 5 at St Alban’s Church in North Harrow.

She added: “I am most looking forward to meeting other young people from across the globe, finding out about their lives and working together to make a positive difference.”
