A pair of teenage brothers are heading to Brazil to help complete homes for children rescued from the streets and slums.

Seb, 14 and Alex Green, 13, of Western Terrace, Hammersmith, are preparing to travel to Curitiba on a 12 day visit in April to the favelas (slums) with their family to help complete one of three children’s homes.

The teenagers, who go to Portland Place School in Westminster, will be visiting the city which is hosting part of this year’s FIFA World Cup, through charity Mission Direct.

They were inspired to sign up for the trip after meeting others who had volunteered and made a difference to children living in poverty.

Seb said: “I’m looking forward to going to Brazil and helping the children from the slums in Curitiba after we met other people who had been abroad to help people in need. The house we’re helping to complete is called Lar Feliz, which translates to ‘happy house’ and I hope the children enjoy it there once it’s finished. I’d also like to play football with some of the local children, especially as the World Cup is being held there this year.”

Alex and Seb will be painting, grouting and tiling, as well as helping to fit windows and door, putting up shelves and digging the garden in the house which has already had its outer walls completed by local members of the charity.

They will also have the opportunity to do crafts with children from the favelas and visit other projects in the area, such as the local orphanage. They will also have some down-time with local children, with plenty of opportunities to play football.

The boys’ headmaster, Tim Cook added that everybody at the school is very proud of Alex and Seb for getting involved in the project. “They will no doubt make an enormous impact on the lives of the children they are helping,” he said.
