Two motor-scooters and 40 bags of rubbish were collected by a team of volunteers using canoes to clean up Greenford’s Grand Union Canal.

The team, from Greenford Delta, joined forces with Ealing Canoe Club and the Canal & River Trust to complete the work on Saturday (September 26).

A team of 24 took to the canoes to help keep the popular stretch between Horsenden Hill, in Perivale, and the Black Horse pub in top condition.

Greenford Delta spokesman John Kane said: “We were really pleased to have teamed up with Louise Heather and the Canoe Club for this event. The sight of those canoes on the water focused everyone’s attention on the main attraction which is this beautiful stretch of canal.

“We hope this is just the first of many Litter Flotillas. Thanks must also go to the Black Horse pub at Greenford for their hospitality.”

Greenford Delta are on the look-out for more volunteers.

Canal & River Trust volunteer development co-ordinator Debbie Vidler said: “It’s brilliant that John and his team have taken such a proactive approach to keeping this stretch of the canal in good condition.

“Getting out in the canoes is certainly a fun way to collect litter, and it does so much to help us improve the canal. Volunteers work so hard on the canal and we’re always happy to support them in any way we can.”
