THOUSANDS of pupils are set for a day off tomorrow as teachers go on strike.
At least 26 schools across Hounslow have confirmed they will close should the one-day walk-out go ahead as planned.
A further 27 schools in the borough have confirmed they will be partially open, with only some classes expected to attend, as teachers across London take industrial action.
Just seven schools have said they will be open for business as normal.
Members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and NASUWT trade unions voted earlier this year to strike and thousands of teachers from across the capital are expected to head to a rally in central London this Thursday.
The unions, which claim to represent nine out of 10 teachers between them, say the walk-out was organised over what they describe as an excessive workload, pay cuts and changes to pensions which mean they will work longer for less.
Marilyn Bater, secretary of Hounslow NUT, has accused education secretary Michael Gove of refusing to enter into 'genuine dialogue' over the grievance and said most schools in Hounslow would be closed on Thursday.
A Department for Education spokeswoman said a recent poll had shown 70 per cent of respondents either opposed the strikes or believed teachers should not be allowed to strike at all.
"All strikes will do is disrupt parents' lives, hold back children's education and damage the reputation of the profession," she added.
