Teacher strike affects two thirds of schools in Hammersmith and Fulham

NUT members will walk out of 39 schools on Thursday in a row over pay and pensions

Teachers will strike across London on Thursday, October 17

Nearly 70 per cent schools will be closed or partly closed in Hammersmith and Fulham on Thursday (17) as teachers strike in a dispute over pay, pensions and increased workloads.

Out of 56 primary and secondary state schools in the borough, 21 have confirmed they will be completely closed and 18 schools will be partially closed, Just 17 schools will remain open as usual.

Dennis Charman, chairman of H&F branch of the National Union of Teachers, said up to 900 teachers across the borough are expected to walk out of classes including members from the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers.

Councillor Georgie Cooney, cabinet member for education, has condemned the one-day regional strike.

She said: “We do not support this strike. One day lost for a child’s education is a day too many and the strike will also cause problems for hard working parents. We will do everything possible to minimise disruption to residents.”

Bob Stapley, NUT London regional secretary, said: “Strike action is never a step that teachers take lightly and we are very aware and concerned about the inconvenience it causes parents.

“Unfortunately we are faced with a Coalition Government that is refusing to listen to the reasonable demands of the profession. Changes to pay, pensions, and workload will make teaching a far less attractive profession, which is not in the long-term interests of teachers and children.”

Some schools will remain open for lessons with the support of staff, governors and volunteers.

All schools have contacted parents to inform them of their plans. For updated information, visit www.lbhf.gov.uk/schoolstrikes .
