All schools in Westminster are expected to be affected by the teacher strike tomorrow.

The National Union of Teachers (NUT) is leading a national one-day walk-out tomorrow (March 26) in a row over pay, pensions and bigger workloads.

The union is concerned that government changes will have a damaging effect on children’s education. These include teachers having to work until they are at least 68, increasing pension contributions by 50 per cent and introducing a controversial performance related pay system.

Recent government figures show that teachers in primary schools are working 60 hours a week, which the union believes is too much and forcing teachers to quit the profession.

Michael Parker, secretary of Westminster NUT, said: “We expect all schools to be affected by the strike. The NUT in Westminster is a majority union and has a particularly strong presence in primary schools, so we expect every primary school will be affected.

“The point of our action is we need to have proper discussions with the Secretary of State (Michael Gove). We have no argument with any head teachers in Westminster or the local authority. This is a national dispute.”

He added: “People were very supportive of us at the regional strike in October. This is not something we want to do but it’s clearly a last resort and taken very reluctantly.”

More information soon on how each school will be affected.
