Students at Gumley House in Isleworth spent a day with homeless young people and families in need at The Cardinal Hume Centre.

This is the second year the school has teamed up with organisation located between Victoria and Pimlico, to raise awareness and funds to help people in need of support.

During the day, the group of 10 pupils were split into groups and had a chance to participate in the free English language classes, helped out with pricing and displaying in the charity shop as well as playing with children in the free creche service for parents to leave their children while they take a class.

Teacher Celia Hannigan went along with the students to the volunteering day out at the centre which has been set up to allow young people, families, and local people to gain the skills they need to overcome poverty and homelessness.

This year pupils have raised £263 from a sponsored sleepover in the school hall which will be used towards putting a smile on the faces of young people who live at the hostel this Christmas, and the Gumley girls will be making festive hampers to give to those at the Cardinal Hume Centre too.

The group were to talk about their experience and what they learnt during a school assembly.

Sandra Deeble, community officer at Cardinal Hume Centre, said: "Girls that came today were engaged and interested.

"A few expressed an interest in volunteering when they are in the sixth form.

"This year they have raised money for us as well as doing a sponsored sleep in the school hall to reflect on what it is to be homeless."
