DRAMATISTS with learning difficulties were thrilled to collect £3,000 after a team of determined students put themselves through a Dragons’ Den-style grilling to secure the cash.

Impact Theatre, which is based in Acton and seeks to empower people with learning difficulties through performing arts, was handed the donation last week.

Five students from Harrodian School in Barnes gave a presentation on behalf of the theatre to the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative. The campaign has raised £1million for grassroots charities up and down the country.

The 14-year-olds impressed judges and an audience of hundreds with a behind-the-scenes video at the theatre, currently based in Stirling Road, Acton.

The group is due to move into a new arts centre in Perivale later this year. Alongside drama rehearsals, the new home will provide training and employment to people with learning difficulties.

Artistic director Kim Mughan collected the cheque with member Lee Gentles, who has learning disabilities, at a star-studded gala in Bayswater last week.

She said: “This is an impressive initiative which has clearly changed the lives of many people.

“Impact will use the money raised towards soundproofing the performance area at our community arts centre.”
