The confidence Ealing residents have in the police can be tracked for the first time at a borough and neighbourhood level.

Deputy Mayor for Policing And Crime Stephen Greenhalgh has launched two new online tools; the Confidence Dashboard and Neighbourhood Confidence Comparator, which allow the public to see how well their local police are performing compared to other areas.

The tools also allow people to see which Londoners in terms of age and ethnicity have the least confidence in the police.

The Confidence Dashboard shows confidence at a borough level and between different social groups and highlights those living in west London generally reporting a more favourable attitude towards the police.

In Ealing overall confidence in the police is 67 per cent, 67 per cent in Acton, 69 per cent in Ealing, 70 per cent in Greenford/Northolt and 63 per cent in Southall.

The highest percentage was 86 per cent in Richmond and the lowest 49 per cent in Newham.

The Neighbourhood Confidence Comparator groups London’s 108 policing neighbourhoods into 12 types depending on dozens of economic, demographic and social indicators.

Grouping neighbourhoods makes it easier to see which are alike. It is hoped that police leaders from low confidence neighbourhoods can look to their peers in similar neighbourhoods that score higher and borrow ideas.

Mr Greenhalgh said: “The Mayor and I have been clear - cutting crime is not enough, we need to see a boost in Londoners' confidence. We know the police themselves can work to improve confidence by engaging with the public, communicating well and addressing local concerns.

“Right now in Ealing, confidence in the police is not as high as we would like, although some parts of the borough have higher confidence scores. We hope these tools will be used by local police leaders to make fair comparisons between similar neighbourhoods in order to learn from areas of London with higher levels of confidence.”
