Winners of the Hounslow Chronicle steam competition Gordon Pilling, 82, and wife Marlene, 76, of Firs Drive, Cranford were thrilled to set foot on the Black Five 44932, on Sunday (1).

Mr Pilling, a retired British Airways engineer at Heathrow, and his wife who also worked for the airline, have lived in Cranford for 51 years and were delighted to win the tickets.

The couple who are steam train enthusiasts boarded The Cathedral Express train at 10.42am on platform 2 from Feltham station, and took to their Premier Dining seats, for a day trip to Yeovil Junction.

Mrs Pilling said they had been on a steam train ride some 25 years ago from Preston to Carlisle, but described this recent outing as "a trip of a lifetime."

She added: "We were both really thrilled as we are steam train enthusiasts.

"Over the years we have collected quite a lot of memorabilia too.

"It was wonderful it stopped at Feltham as it's 10 minutes away for us.

"For us it was our Orient Express trip.

"The food was lovely, great weather and the people we talked to at the station was interesting and looking out of the window was lovely too.

"It was lovely being in Yeovil and watching the engine being turned around and the steam coming from it.

"It was a really nice and wonderful day - a day to remember."

The couple were among the crowds who got all steamed up to feast their eyes on the first locomotive to stop at Feltham station in 50 years.

Those lucky enough to have a ticket boarded while others stood in awe and waved passengers off.

The steam train travelled through several stations in the borough including Chiswick, Brentford, and Hounslow.
