Staff at a health club in Fulham are undertaking a series of charity events to support a sick colleague.

Lucy Shiplee, 22, who works at The Hurlingham Club, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer earlier this year, after months of feeling run-down and a mysterious lump appearing on her throat.

Now, three co-workers at the Ranelagh Gardens private members club are preparing to walk 30 miles from the Thames Barriers to Richmond on October 17.

But before that, Laura Greenyer and Fiza Hussain are hosting a Charioke (charity karaoke) Night at the Hammersmith Club on Saturday (October 10), while a member of staff at the Rutland Grove venue will also run from Putney to Kew Bridges to raise money on October 31. All money collected will go to Macmillan Cancer Support.

Lucy, from Putney, said she was moved by the actions of her colleagues. The lifeguard said: “I was quite emotional when they first suggested it. It’s very touching that people care about you and think about you like that.

“I’m 22 and having that whole group rally around me is really supportive and has boosted my morale.”

Lucy was diagnosed in July, three days before her university graduation. She has had the lump removed and taken a dose of radiation therapy in September, and is now on a life-long course of replacement hormone therapy.

Tickets to the karaoke event are £5 and available on the door.
