A MEETING is set to take place on Thursday to discuss the embargo on sending elderly residents to Southern Cross homes in the borough.

It is one year since concerns over the welfare of residents in the borough came to light, and the council's hard line towards the care homes is still in place.

Councillor Philip Corthorne, cabinet member for social services, health and housing, said: "We implemented an embargo on all new placements at Southern Cross homes and this embargo remains in place.

"The decision was taken not to move residents as that would affect their well being.

"At the meeting they will show us how they plan to improve their care to residents."

He did admit there could be adverse legal consequences to the embargo, but Hillingdon was determined to put the welfare of the residents first.

"I have written to a solicitor to make sure I am doing all I can do. It is possible for challenges to be made over the action we have taken and we are prepared for this."
