DELIGHTED schoolchildren at Dormers Wells School got some bright ideas when they were paid a visit by Trevor Baylis OBE. Mr Baylis, best known for inventing the wind-up radio, grew up in Southall and spoke to pupils at his former secondary school.

The inventor and TV personality also ran a hands-on design and technology session with the pupils to demonstrate his inventions and get them interested in practical subjects.

Mr Baylis said he was excited to be back in his old school: “Many children who struggle with traditional academic subjects in school find real inspiration in invention.

“This is why it’s so important that young adults are encouraged to explore the world of innovation from an early age.”

Alex Pritchard, deputy head at the school said: “It was great welcoming an ex-pupil through the doors, especially one as well-known and successful as Trevor Baylis OBE.

“The session on inventions that he held was really well received by the children and they’ve not stopped talking about it since.

“It injected them with enthusiasm, something that money just can’t buy, and they’ve already started planning their ideas to enter in to The Dream Lab so fingers crossed one of them wins.”

The Dream Lab project aims to find a search for young inventors in Britian aged 13 to 18 who can design a sleep-related product.

Mr Baylis will be judging the competition, along with Ortis Deley, presenter of The Gadget Show.

The winner with the best design will bag £20,000 for their school and £10,000 for themselves.
