Children from Blair Peach Primary School in Southall raised a fantastic £792 to beat hunger in eastern Africa.

Some 500 pupils aged three to 11 at the school and staff took part in a sponsored Welly Walk before Christmas in aid of the Give Hunger the Boot appeal from the UK charity Farm Africa.

Whilst the nursery children donned their welllies and walked fivelaps around the playground to cover a mile each, the rest of the school headed down the road to Minet Country Park to clock up the miles. Cumulatively, all those taking part walked an amazing 1,033 miles.

Janine Keeling, PSHE Coordinator and Nursery Teacher, said: "It was the first year the school had taken part in this campaign and we chose it for two reasons – because of the good work Farm Africa do and the promotion of healthy living through the ‘Welly Walk’. The children really enjoyed taking part and we had such a generous response from parents. In fact, the Nursery children loved the welly walk so much we now do a monthly mile."

Money raised by the school, which is in Beaconsfield Road, Southall, will be used to train farmers in how to grow and produce more food and increase their harvest yields.

‘Give Hunger the Boot’ is a campaign run annually around harvest time by Farm Africa. It encourages schools and faith groups to fundraise so that families in Africa can grow enough crops to eat every harvest.
