A MAJOR event is being planned for Southall next year to celebrate the Queen's diamond jubilee.

Planning has already begun for the event, which organisers hope will take place in Southall Park and include another street party in Clarence Street.

Julian Bell, leader of Ealing Council, said the success of the last street party, held to celebrate the Royal Wedding, encouraged the organisation of another event.

He said: “We received a lot of feedback from people regarding the Clarence Street event, and the one thing they kept saying was that they'd like to see us do something similar again soon.”

Mr Bell said planning was in its very early stages but he has begun discussions with Ealing Southall MP Virendra Sharma.

Mr Sharma said: “We have already started planning. Our idea would be to have a big celebration that would bring people together and show the very best of Southall.

“We would like to promote the most positive aspects of the area, as there can be some people who would tend to focus on the on the more negative aspects.”

Mr Sharma said he is hoping that part of Southall Park could be used for the diamond jubilee celebrations, complete with a marquee and stalls.

“We would like to see different groups come together and share their cultures. We are speaking to people like the Polish community to see if they would like to join in and we would also like to see different food stalls.”

Mr Sharma added that he wanted to make it clear that no one individual or group would make a profit from the event, if it went ahead.

An estimated 4,000 people descended on Clarence Street late last month to celebrate the wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton.
