The parliamentary committee responsible for hearing petitions against HS2 announced its programme for hearings last week.

Ahead of the announcement, HS2 created a secure email system that it asked petitioners to sign up to to view the document outlining the response from HS2 to their petition, which attracted a lot of complaints.

Chair of the High Speed Rail Bill Select Committee, MP Robert Syms, said last week: "Given that many petitioners may not feel comfortable with the complex email system, we strongly urge HS2 to offer alternative ways for petitioners to communicate with them if they prefer, including normal email and post."

In the last few days HS2 has emailed petitioners saying it will scrap the sign-up system in favour of using more traditional methods of communication.

"It is a small victory but we are glad that the committee are showing that they are now callling the shots," Harefield Against HS2 chairman Doreen McIntyre said.

Lottie Jones, for Ruislip Against HS2, said: "We are hopeful that after years of getting no answers at consultation meetings and community forums with HS2, that we will finally get our views heard at the committee hearings."
