A 12-metre high wall at St Mary’s Hospital has been given a new look after being covered in blooming plants.

The greenery is part of the hospital’s attempts to improve the environment and community it is in. The plants will climb and cover the 70 sq metre wall of the hospital’s Winston Churchill Building and look over the bustling Praed Street in Paddington .

The hospital hopes it will become a haven for wildlife and a focal point for the area.

There are six different seasonal plant species on the green wall including geraniums, jasmine and ivy. It has been designed to be in bloom all year round and provide a home to birds, butterflies and insects.

It also has its own dedicated storage tank to capture rain water which is then channelled slowly through the wall to nourish the plants, and is one of two green projects the hospital has undertaken .

It has also built a 24sp metre sunken rain garden in its Clarence Wing light well which will absorb rainwater and reduce urban flooding. The rain collected will be used to water other hospital greenery.

The maintenance-free installations were commissioned by business improvement district PaddingtonNow.

Jill Blowers, property manager for St Mary’s Hospital, said: "These projects have been a fabulous example of collaboration between various partners for the benefit of the community. I can’t help but feel excited about the benefit that our patients, staff, and visitors will feel from the livening up of our estates and I look forward to seeing it flourish."

The wall and garden were installed and will be maintained by TreeBox Ltd.
