What a shame that Alan Mitchell missed the whole point about being proud of Feltham (Chronicle Letters, January 29).

If he had any knowledge about the background to the West College Skills Centre occupation of the De Brome site in Boundaries Road he would be singing loudly that it needs to be in the High Street.

The current building is acknowledged by West Thames College as not being 'fit for purpose' and the difficulty of keeping any development of the site within the Green Belt regulations has led the college to seek a more central site.

West Thames College needs to attract students from not only the west end of the London Borough of Hounslow but other surrounding boroughs.

So what does the site in Boundaries Road offer? Poor public transport links and the prospect of students making do within a building not 'fit for purpose'?

Councillor Bowen, however, sees the potential of giving Feltham High Street a focal point. A building in keeping with the already modern image and, more importantly, the opportunity for business in the town centre to reap benefits from having students spending in the various outlets.

Feltham has some of the best public transport links around and this, coupled with the low travel costs for students, will mean less use of private vehicles, instead of the gloomy forecast of Alan Mitchell.

Proud of Feltham is what the majority of people are, so let's keep it that wayby having a skills centre that people can be proud of.
