THIS year's Vaisakhi parade in Southall enjoyed one of its best-ever turnouts, with an estimated 100,000 people attending.

The parade, an annual event in Southall which is one of the most important events in the Sikh calendar, made its way through the town centre on Sunday last week.

Didar Singh Randawa, head of the gurdwara in Park Avenue said: "It was a great parade. We were delighted to see so many people come out and we estimate there were about 100,000 people there."

Several roads were closed off during the procession, prompting some complaints that Transport for London (TfL) had not done enough in advance to reduce congestion and delays.

TfL said last week that it had done everything possible to minimise disruption.

A Vaisakhi ceremony was held at the gurdwara temple in Havelock Road, the largest outside India, last Wednesday.
