Sick children in hospital this Christmas were treated to two lots of presents thanks to contributions from west London residents and businesses.

Over £3,000 was raised at a collection for the children's intensive care unit at St Mary's Hospital, in Paddington by donations from locals at Tesco's Regent Street Metro.

Money from the two-week collection has bought 14 tablets and 14 TVs as well as books and DVDs.

The fund-raising event was part of the retailer’s Borough Champion programme, which involved ten community champions organising a toy collection in their boroughs.

Rebecca Selvakumar, Tesco borough community champion for Westminster, said: “We all remember how excited we were to unwrap presents on Christmas morning and this year we wanted to make sure as many sick children in Westminster got to experience that magical feeling.

“We are delighted to have worked with St. Mary’s Hospital and thanks to the generosity of our customers we have been able to make Christmas that little bit extra special.”

Tesco also donated an additional £1,000 to St Mary's Hospital.

Patients were also surprised by a visit from Santa and another present drop including new books and toys donated by Ace Café London bike club and Car Giant - the UK's biggest car showroom.

Tina Halton, senior play specialist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust said: “The annual visits from Ace Café London bike club and Car Giant always bring some festive cheer to children at St Mary’s Hospital.

“Their very generous donation of gifts and toys means that our children will have plenty to play with during the festive season and beyond.”
