A shrine has been dedicated in memory of a loving mother and wife who died after being hit by a van while walking over a zebra crossing in Hanworth.

A bouquet of flowers, a drawing with the words 'we love mum' from Alyssa and Papa (father), and a photo with the words R.I.P Flora have been placed on a pole at the scene of the accident which happened on Hampton Road West near the junction with Apex Corner, on Friday, October 10.

The tragic incident has left a family in Hounslow in mourning in which the seven-year-old girl survived, but her 40-year-old mother was unable to recover and died after one week in hospital on Friday (10).

Getwestlondon wants to thank the local resident who took these photos of the shrine after spotting it on her way past this morning (13).

The woman, who did not want to be named, said she knew exactly how dangerous roads could be for pedestrians as she herself had been involved in an incident we reported on back in April.

On that occasion a three-year-old boy was knocked down as her crossed Saxon Avenue in Hanworth, but  despite needing to be flown by air ambulance to hospital he fortunately only received minor injuries.

Police later accepted the driver was not to blame for the accident and no further action was taken.

She said: "It was lucky no-one was badly hurt, but it was still very upsetting and made me fully appreciate just what it is like to go through something like this.

"When I saw the shrine this morning I felt my heart leap up into my mouth. We'd all heard about the accident at the time, but knowing now that this lady died - it's beyond words.

"It happened right in front of her daughter, it's awful.

"That poor girl will have nightmares for the rest of her life.

"The council have to do something about this crossing, it's just not safe.

"Vehicles come round and the drivers can't see people on it before it is too late.

"It's even worse in the dark.

"They need to scrap this crossing and replace it with a pedestrian controlled one with traffic lights, and also some barriers.

"Pedestrians deserve to feel safe when they are on our roads and if I can do anything to help improve safety in this area then I will."

Police are appealing for witnesses who were in the area and saw the accident.

An 18-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of careless driving and has been bailed to return to a police station in late November.

Witnesses should contact the collision investigation unit on 0208 543 5157.
