Running since the 1940s, the Hatch End Horticultural Society held its annual autumn show at the Scout and Guide Headquarters, in Grimsdyke Road, Hatch End.

The society has 400 members and the show hosted 228 entries this year.

Chairman and honourary show secretary Alan Graham explained: "Most people grow the entries in their back gardens; only some have allotments and the entries are judged on their horticultural benefits."

With a good overall turnout at this year's event on Saturday, September 20, the society would like to see more young people joining and participating in future events.

Just a handful of children entered in the under-eight category.

Categories judged included children and novice categories, fruit, vegetables, flowers, floral displays, horticultural photography and domestic entries, with more cakes entered in this category than previously.

Mr Graham said: "Considering the wet, sunless summer, we were nervous about putting on a show this year, when in fact it was the best so far."
