A mother calling for a new crossing outside her son's primary school claims shoppers' safety is being put above that of pupils.

Maria Kosanovic last Wednesday (February 12) submitted a 130-signature petition to Hounslow Council demanding a pedestrian crossing outside the entrance to Ivybridge Primary School, in Summerwood Road, Isleworth.

The 38-year-old, whose six-year-old son Stevan Nenevic attends the school, claims road markings were introduced outside the nearby Tesco store yet her calls for a crossing at the school have previously been ignored.

A 20mph limit and speed humps are already in place on the road outside the school, but Ms Kosanovic claims drivers still speed down the road, putting youngsters at risk.

"It's a busy road and cars often drive very fast here yet there's no safe crossing for schoolchildren, or even markings to show there's a school. It's an accident waiting to happen," she said.

"When I've asked for a crossing in the past, the council has said it's impossible because it would mean moving the bus stop. I've been told zigzag lines aren't possible either because of the parking bays."

"But Tesco has zigzag lines outside, so I don't understand why a supermarket can have them and not a school."

A council spokesman said: "While Summerwood Road is in a 20 mph zone and already has traffic calming measures in the form of road humps, the council is happy to consider carefully the feasibility and merits of any formal crossing facility and will assess all such requests on its merits in relation to the relevant national guidance."

The school declined to comment.
