An angry shopper has slammed management at Tesco after claiming he was mistreated by a staff member.

George Singh, 30, who lives near Osterley Park, told the Chronicle he was ‘verbally abused’ by a member of staff, on Tuesday last week.

He said he was more horrified when the manager of the Osterley store let the employee leave without any apology.

The supermarket chain has since apologised for the incident and admitted that the customer was ‘let down’ on this occasion.

The altercation started when Mr Singh went to use what seemed to be a free self-service checkout machine to buy his shopping.

However, a man, who he later realised was in a Tesco uniform, charged down the aisle towards him shouting ‘get out, that’s my till’.

Mr Singh said he was unaware it was in use and moved away, at which point, he says, the man continued to hurl words of an abusive nature at him.

Mr Singh said: “I told him that there was no need to be rude or aggressive.

“I called the duty manager and asked him how could he let staff talk to a customer like this.”

The 30-year-old said he requested for a member of staff to escort him to his car as he was afraid the man may be waiting for him outside.

Mr Singh added: “The way I feel right now is I do not have anything against the guy that attacked me but for the store for not getting back to me – they have no manners.

"They are not doing their job properly.

“I will never have my mum, sister or girlfriend go there now.”

The police were not called.

Mr Singh made a complaint to the store and requested compensation.

A Tesco spokesman told the Chronicle: “We have investigated the incident.

“We do have very high standards for our customer service and recognise we have let this customer down.

“We apologise for this incident.”
