This shocking fire service video shows how a fire caused by a phone charger can leave a bedroom roaring with flames in less than three minutes.

Firefighters are urging people to make sure they do not leave their chargers plugged in when they are not in use and to make sure they purchase chargers produced by phone manufacturers.

The video shows a small flame starting from a frayed wire, which quickly catches the bedding.

Belching out thick black smoke, the fire then takes hold of clothing in a washing basket and by two minutes and 55 seconds into the video, the entire room is engulfed in fire

Crew commander James Neal from Guildford fire station gave his advice for keeping yourself safe when using chargers.

He said: "Do not leave a charger plugged in when it is not in use, with or without your phone. When your device reaches full charge, it will still draw power and can overheat.

"We have heard about numerous fires in London when phones have been left charging overnight under people's pillows and a fire has started."

CC Neal continued: "The other thing is that you should only buy the charger which is sold by your phone's manufacturer.

" We are seeing a lot of cheap chargers being imported from China which do not use the right components for the specific phones."

The video was produced by North Wales Fire and Rescue Service when two deadly electrical fires broke out in Saltney and Oakenholt within four hours of each other, the Chester Chronicle reports .

On Wednesday September 20, the occupant in Saltney, who was downstairs at the time, was only alerted to the fire by his smoke alarm.

The occupants of the house in Oakenholt were not home at the time of the second fire, but a neighbour saw smoke coming from the roof and raised the alarm.

In November 2015, a man died in a fire at his Guildford home caused by a mobile phone charger , sparking an urgent warning from the fire service .
