FAST-FOOD staff were joined by councillors and residents in a major clean-up of Shepherd's Bush Green last week.

Workers from McDonald's, in Uxbridge Road, swapped flipping burgers and donned high visibility jackets, grabbed litter bags and headed out onto the streets.

They were joined by councillors Mercy Umeh, Andrew Jones and Iain Coleman and the result was a three-mile walk around the Green, and some surrounding streets, and eight sacks filled with litter dropped in the area last Tuesday (27/9).

It was all part of Keep Britain Tidy's Love Where You Live campaign to urge businesses and food chains to take responsibility to help keep their neighbourhood litter-free.

Pru Naik, Shepherd's Bush McDonald’s franchisee, insists he is determined to do his bit and sends a member of staff our three times a day to pick up litter.

He said: “As a local businessman I am really proud to be supporting Love Where You Live. It's a great way to motivate the community and highlight that litter is everyone's responsibility.

“I'm often frustrated to see so much litter on the streets, not least because it's unsightly, but also because it has a damaging effect on the environment.

“The event was a great success and a good example of what can be achieved if people pull together. It's encouraging to see so many people committed to raising awareness of the problem and helping make such a positive difference.”

Phil Barton, Keep Britain Tidy chief executive, said: “A few years ago we brought to McDonald's attention that they were one of the brands contributing to litter on our streets.

“In response they have significantly increased their efforts to promote the anti-litter message and supporting our campaigns.”
