A STUDENT who sexually assaulted and robbed a woman on a train platform has been jailed for two years.

Kundan Maratha, 21, admitted to carrying out the violent attack at Hayes and Harlington Station on January 29 just before 1am.

The 27-year-old victim, from Slough, was alone on platform three and waiting for her train when Maratha approached and asked her to perform a sexual act on him.

When she refused, he grabbed her and forced his hands inside her trousers.

The woman tried to defend herself but she was pushed to the ground, and Maratha then smacked her head against the concrete floor before taking her purse and running out of the station. She was not seriously hurt.

Maratha’s image was captured on the station’s CCTV, and British Transport Police (BTP) appealed to the public for information.

An officer recognised him and he was arrested at Paddington Station on February 9.

Maratha, of Marvell Avenue, Hayes, admitted sexual assault and robbery, and he was sentenced at Harrow Crown Court on Friday, December 9.

He was also put on the sex offenders’ register for 10 years.

Detective Constable Martin Coburn, the BTP’s investigating officer, said: “This was a despicable attack on a young woman, but with Maratha now behind bars he will not be able to attack anyone else.

“The victim was subjected to a horrific ordeal but has shown tremendous bravery throughout this process, despite having to re-live what happened to bring Maratha to justice.

“She could have been too scared to come forward and report this to police, but it is to her credit that she did and I hope this gives anyone else in a similar situation the courage to do the same.”
