There was a series of pile-ups in Heston this morning when a burst water main turned a busy road into an ice rink.

At least 10 cars were involved in three separate crashes in New Heston Road, by the junction with North Hyde Lane, between 7am and 8.30am, police said.

The accidents, in which no one is reported to have been injured, are understood to have been caused after a water main in the road burst, creating an area of treacherous black ice.

New Heston Road was closed at the junction following the crashes, and buses were diverted, according to Transport for London.

The burst water main, which a council spokesman said was reported yesterday, has left a number of homes in the road without water.

Hounslow Highways, which is responsible for maintaining council roads, tweeted just after midday that Thames Water was at the scene trying to restore supplies.

A council spokesman said it was hoped the works would be completed today.
