REGARDING the Chronicle's web vote question, 'should Hounslow residents be fined for not returning their electoral registration forms'.

Absolutely not.

We live increasingly in a society where prices for everything are going up in major shifts - food, utility bills, taxes, parking fees and fines.

Are Hounslow residents' salaries going up by corresponding amounts? Surely not.

I have started campaigning and it is always soul-destroying to hear from a person on the street that they 'don't vote'. As appalling as that is, the real danger is that it means the Government of Britain is vulnerable to hijack by tactical voters.

It is people's right not to vote, and who can blame them when they see Labour MPs, supposedly socialist and for the people, swindling on their expenses, and Tory MPs who are millionaires.

In the coming election voters can make a start in the right direction - boycott the three main parties, who can take collective responsibility for the mess Britain is in.

When are we going to get resident and taxpayer friendly governance in this nation?

It is time those people, and the EU particularly, who seek to impose legislation, penalties and controls on the man/woman on the street, are reined back, better still fired; thus reducing council costs and council tax.

A better step to encourage nonvoters to vote is to remove some privilege - maybe they go to the back of GPs lists for appointments for instance, or cannot claim benefits.
