Self-service does people out of jobs

I have just read Nina Rossi's story in the Chronicle (October 16) about 140 jobs being axed at Boots' headquarters in Feltham.

I have just read Nina Rossi's story in the Chronicle (October 16) about 140 jobs being axed at Boots' headquarters in Feltham.

With more and more technology taking place this, unfortunately, is inevitable. But we don't always help ourselves. I do all my food shopping in Tesco, Dukes Green, where self service checkouts have been installed.

Whenever I am 'guided' towards these checkouts I refuse saying 'no thank you, they cost jobs'. As more and more customers use these checkouts, more and more manned checkouts, along with jobs, will go.

I urge everyone to boycott the self-service tills because, eventually, about three people will man about 20

checkouts. There will be no point in complaining about this afterwards, as we will only have ourselves to blame. Think about it.
