A Brentford FC fan has accused Hounslow Council of lacking in Christmas spirit after he and other fans were fined for parking near the stadium on Boxing Day.

Dr Ian Weatherhead says he was shocked to receive a £110 ticket after parking in Brent Way to watch the Bees take on Ipswich, as he wrongly assumed restrictions would not apply on a major bank holiday.

The fine, which reduces to £55 if paid within 14 days, compounded his misery after the home side slumped to a 4-2 defeat at Griffin Park to dent their promotion hopes.

The lifelong Brentford supporter, who lives in Farnham, said he saw tickets on around 10 other cars also parked on a single yellow line in the road, just south of Brentford High Street - at least two of which he knew to belong to other Bees fans.

"Brentford FC are currently enjoying their most successful spell in over 50 years. Isn't it a shame that the London Borough of Hounslow is unable to support the club and its many supporters by having a more enabling parking policy, particularly at Christmas time," he said.

"The club is enjoying capacity crowds at Griffin Park, bringing more and more people into the borough. A more enlightened local authority might be trying to support this period of success rather than nailing genuine supporters in such a disproportionate way (and at Christmas!).

"I hope the advent of Brentford's new stadium in Lionel Road will prompt some more intelligent thinking from the local authority. Bah Humbug Hounslow, and shame on you."

Deputy Hounslow Council leader Amrit Mann said: "Parking enforcement has always been carried out on public holidays in Hounslow since 1993. Unless it is explicitly stated on the signs, motorists should assume that parking restrictions apply on yellow lines.

"Yellow lines are there to ensure safety for motorists and pedestrians and to help traffic flow."

He added that 108 PCNs (penalty charge notices) had been issued throughout the borough on December 26, 2014, compared with 99 on the same day the previous year.

Hounslow Council did waive parking charges at council-run car parks and metered parking bays on Christmas Eve 2014 to help last-minute shoppers save a few pennies.
